  1. Hello!

I hope this finds you well. I have been practicing the Triple Harmony Drill, and I am curious if you can elaborate on what it means to focus on each of the three burners? I may be inducing some prior training into this drill, where I envision/feel that I am “breathing” through each spot. Is there another way I should be practicing this, or is it simply the spot-focus that matters most?
Also, are these burners considered to be in the center of the body, or on the surface? I have read both that these are considered metaphysical/spiritual structures, or actual organs, depending on the writer. What are your teachings on this aspect?

Thank you very much for your time– I am enjoying these practices!

    1. Hello and thank you for your question.

The position of the hands w/ regards to the burners is the most important feature, as the qi of the hands stimulate the qi of the burners automatically. The burners are qi structures and don’t have a physical analog, although the physical tissue is affected by the qi.

The method you are describing is from alchemical schools that imitated an alchemical furnace, because the furnace has the general shape of the human torso. There were typically three burners or grates used to regulate the heating within the furnace, and a bellows could be used to blow in those openings to increase the temperature.

This model introduced errors into spiritual practice, because there is no equivalent to the head on a typical furnace. Hence, the Upper Dan Tien gets ignored. Without a constant balanced charge going to brain, qi regulation suffers, and thought will shift toward primitve responses.
      .
The furnace model gained popularity in the 80s, and was an outgrowth of a simplification/standardization trend in China. Since most people past their late 50s suffer from a lack of yang, these fire models can be beneficial in producing a better sense of energy and liveliness. Not the best method if you are starting at a younger age or want to reinforce your spirituality.

Hope this was helpful for you!
